Impact Stories
Ahmed, a refugee from Somalia, arrived in Kentucky with hopes of building a better future for his family.
At first, navigating the immigration process was overwhelming — but with support from BIRS, Ahmed received help completing his citizenship paperwork, practicing for his interview, and connecting with legal resources.
After months of hard work, Ahmed proudly became a U.S. citizen. Today, he works full-time, owns his first car, and volunteers with BIRS to help others achieve their dreams too.
“BIRS changed my life. They believed in me when I didn’t know where to start,” says Ahmed.
The Hernandez Family Finds a Home
When the Hernandez family arrived in Louisville after fleeing violence in their home country, they struggled to find safe, affordable housing.
Through BIRS’s housing support program, they found a welcoming neighborhood, assistance with their first rental application, and guidance on understanding their tenant rights.
Today, the Hernandez family is thriving — their children are enrolled in school, and both parents are working steady jobs.
“We finally feel safe and stable thanks to the help we received from BIRS,” shares Mrs. Hernandez.
